A digital rectal exam (DRE) is a simple, quick procedure in which a healthcare provider inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the anus to check for abnormalities in the rectum, prostate and pelvic area. A DRE is typically done as part of a routine physical examination. If abnormalities are found, your provider will talk through next steps with you.
