Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration of the Thyroid

An ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) is generally ordered when imaging studies cannot accurately determine the cause of a nodule (or growth) in the thyroid gland or to help determine if it is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

This test uses sound waves in order to take a sample of a thyroid nodule for examination with a small needle. This procedure is less invasive than a surgical biopsy and requires minimal preparation with little to no scarring.
