Hip Pain and Injury Care

Hip pain can come from arthritis, an injury, or problems with the muscles and tendons around the joint. Most hip problems improve with physical therapy, activity changes, or injections, and some need surgery. An orthopedic specialist can pinpoint the cause of hip pain, stiffness, or clicking and guide treatment from the first visit through full recovery.

At Duly, your hip care is supported by specialized providers across sports medicine, joint replacement, physiatry, and pain management. You get advanced imaging, a full range of treatments, and surgery options that fit your life, including anterior hip replacement and other procedures done as same-day outpatient surgery at our award-winning surgery centers.

Do I need to see a doctor for hip pain?

See a doctor if hip pain lasts more than a few days, keeps coming back, or gets in the way of walking, stairs, sleep, or putting on your shoes. Hip pain can start suddenly with an injury or build slowly from arthritis or overuse, and it often shows up in the groin, the outer hip, or the buttock.

Symptoms to watch

  • Pain that does not improve with rest, ice, or over-the-counter medicine
  • Pain in your groin, outer hip, or buttock, especially with walking or stairs
  • Stiffness that makes it hard to put on shoes and socks or get out of a car
  • A limp, or leaning away from your sore hip when you walk
  • Clicking, catching, or a feeling that your hip locks up
  • Pain at night, especially lying on the sore side

Common causes

  • Arthritis and cartilage wear that builds over time
  • Overuse of the muscles and tendons around the hip, like bursitis or tendinitis
  • Sports injuries, including labral tears and groin strains
  • Falls and accidents, from strains to fractures

A note on emergencies: if hip pain follows a fall and you cannot put weight on your leg, or your leg looks shorter or turned outward, this can mean a hip fracture. Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. For urgent injuries that are not emergencies, our orthopedic immediate care can often see you the same day.

04 Review your treatment planYour specialist walks you through your options, and you decide on next steps together.
05 Start treatmentTreatment may include physical therapy and image-guided injections when appropriate. If hip replacement becomes the best treatment option, you’ll be cared for by one of our Joint Replacement Specialists.
06 Surgery, when appropriateIf surgery is the best option, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques like hip arthroscopy and anterior hip replacement, often as same-day outpatient procedures.
07 Recovery and rehabilitationOur physical therapists guide your recovery with exercises that rebuild strength and steady your stride.

Frequently asked questions about hip care

Why does my hip hurt in my groin?

Groin pain is the classic sign of a problem inside the hip joint itself, like arthritis, a labral tear, or hip impingement. Pain on the outer hip more often comes from bursitis or the tendons around the joint. Where your hip hurts tells a specialist a lot, so it helps to notice exactly where you feel it.

Is my pain coming from my hip or my lower back?

It can be hard to tell, because a pinched nerve in the lower back can send pain into the hip and buttock. Pain in the groin that worsens with walking usually points to the hip. Pain that shoots below the knee, or comes with numbness and tingling, points more toward the back. A specialist can examine both and find the true source.

Will I need hip surgery?

Most hip pain does not need surgery. Many people feel better with physical therapy, activity changes, medication, or injections. Surgery is usually considered when arthritis is advanced, a labral tear keeps causing pain, or non-surgical care has not worked. A specialist can tell you where your hip stands after an exam and imaging.

How long is recovery after hip replacement?

Many people are up and walking the day of surgery, and with the anterior approach, many go home the same day. Most return to daily activities within a few weeks. Our joint replacement patients reach about 75% mobility in an average of three months. Physical therapy is a big part of a full, faster recovery.
